At St Augustine’s Primary School, we are committed to fostering a life-long passion for Art and Design. We believe that Art and Design offers exciting and stimulating opportunities for all children to express themselves. Art and Design offers the chance to develop children’s self-esteem, self-identity, self-worth, motivation, stimulation and discipline. The Art and Design scheme of work at St Augustine’s aims to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. Celebrating differences and promoting inclusion. It gives pupils the opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history.
When delivering Art and Design at St Augustine’s, we follow an adapted scheme of work from Kapow Primary. Units of learning are organised to fit the needs of our children and to make links with wider curriculum learning where possible. Lessons are always practical in nature and encourage experimental and exploratory learning with pupils using sketchbooks to document their ideas. Creativity and independent outcomes are robustly embedded into our units, supporting students in learning how to make their own creative choices and decisions, so that their art outcomes, whilst still being knowledge-rich, are unique to the pupil and personal.
After the execution of our Art and Design scheme, pupils will leave primary school equipped with a range of techniques and the confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation for their Art and Design learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
