At St Augustine’s CE Primary School we believe in the importance of pupil voice. Our pupil voice consists of a School Council, a Sports Council, Collective Worship Leaders and Anti-Bullying Ambassadors.
School Council
Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) says that children and young people should have a say in decisions that affect their lives.
A school council can provide a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions which impact upon them.
A school council that is supported and nurtured helps to improve many aspects of school life. It is an important and useful way for our school to provide leadership and development opportunities for their pupils.
School councils are an excellent way in which to increase participation, teaching young people about democracy, local and global citizenship and accountability.
At St Augustine’s Primary school, we respect and value the fundamental British values of democracy and ensure the views and opinions of our pupils are expressed. At the beginning of September, the children elect school council members from Years 1-6. Pupils who would like to apply for the position are asked to complete and present a persuasive speech, poster or piece of writing to their classes. The candidates will then be voted for fairly and democratically by their peers.
The elections for School Council are a good example of democracy; this means everyone in the class has the chance to be involved in deciding who will represent their interest in the school.
The School Council meets fortnightly to discuss issues raised by their peers and ideas to help improve our school even further. They meet every half term to select two super citizens from each year group that are representative of our half term school value.
The school council aims to bring about positive changes in our school. If you have any ideas or suggestions to help improve our school, please speak to your school council representatives, who will bring your suggestions to the school council meeting.
Meet our new School Council members for 2024-2025.
Sports Council
Our Sports Council is comprised of three Year 5 pupils and 3 Year 6 pupils. These pupils are enthusiastic about sport, interested in developing P.E. in school, full of enthusiastic and exciting ideas and consistently present role model sporting behaviour.
The Sports Council meet every week with our PE specialist Mr V. During these meetings the sports council discuss and suggest ideas around school sporting events, playground activities during break times and ensure that our PE equipment is ready for use in lessons. They also pass on suggestions from their classes as to how to improve physical education here at St Augustines. They are a key component of making PE accessible and enjoyable for all, and are committed to making Physical Education the best it can be!
Collective Worship Leaders
We have six Collective Worship Leaders at St Augustine's from Year 5 and Year 6. Anyone in both year groups can become a Collective Worship leader. Children do not have to be worship leaders to take on a role in worship – that is something that we expect of all children.
Our Collective Worship Leaders take an active part in Collective Acts of Worship, they support the adult running worship, choose appropriate songs on occasion and our aim is for worship leaders to plan and lead some class worships.
Collective Worship Leaders are expected to lead by example, demonstrating our Christian Values at all times, showing love and nurture to all members of our community. They monitor worship and collect pupil voice reflections after all Collective Worships. They are available to support other children, classes or key stages in their worships as requested by teachers and they are encouraged to liaise with the school council to raise any issues that concern them whether that be in school or on a global level and decide what to do about it.
We expect our worship leaders to behave in a way that truly reflects our school vision and the Christian Values we live our lives by. They are continually striving to be the best they can be, as God intended.
