Online Parent Workshops

A message from Harriet Amos, the family learning coordinator from the Westminster Adult Education Service:

I hope you are well and staying safe during this unusual time.

We are sad not be visiting schools this term and we miss that interaction with our learners. We know that during lockdown it is more important than ever to stay connected and that this is particularly true for families. With this in mind we have designed a range of free online workshops for families (please see below) to keep their learning fresh and to stay connected. Our aim is to compliment the work that schools are sending out to parents, and also to provide practical help and guidance to support their children in their learning.

During the Easter break we trialled lessons via Zoom and we noted how appreciative learners were to be able to connect with others and see other families.

Our workshops via schools will ensure families stay connected and may even spot friends and families they know from their school – either the playground or indeed their classroom.

We hope to run these workshops on Teams and if not then on Zoom. Families would require access to a computer, laptop or tablet ideally, though a smart phone would work as well. No printer or other materials are required. However, for an enhanced experience printing out follow up materials would be helpful.

These are the workshops they will be running:

English and Maths

Fun with picture books EYFS for families

For children in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 with their parent. Two workshops over 2 weeks. We will read a story together, learn about key parts of the story - the characters, the setting, the plot- and then make something together to help enrich our understanding and love for the book. Families will need a few materials including scissors, paper, card - recycling is fine, and colouring pencils or felt-tips. Access to a printer is helpful though not essential. A parent or carer must join the child with this workshop.
